Expressionism
Expressionism is an art style that distorts reality in order to emphasise personal expression, characterised by intense colour and brushwork.
Expressionism encompasses diverse artistic approaches focused on intense personal expression. Rejecting the rigid bourgeois values of the early 20th century, and breaking away from state-sponsored art academies, Expressionist artists embraced bold simplification, distortion of forms, vibrant, and – at times – discordant colours. Expressionism can be viewed as a natural extension of the Romanticism movement.
